THE POWER OF A SIDE HUSTLE: ONE FAMILY’S BUSINESS GROWS INTO A THRIVING ENTERPRISE
Tv Producer-Turned-Baker Takes To The Streets With New Mobile Cafe Launch
Side Hustle Bread, a family-owned business founded by Jim Serpico, a film and television producer, along with his wife and three children, is expanding its business by launching a new sandwich trailer specializing in Italian flatbread sandwiches. The Serpico family has been selling artisanal bread at farmers’ markets throughout Long Island for the past three years, with a weekly output of over 1,000 loaves. They have gained a reputation for their delicious prosciutto bread, sourdough varieties, and focaccia. In 2022, they were recognized by Bethpage Credit Union as the Best Online Bakery in the Best of Long Island category.
The Serpico family’s new mobile unit, dubbed “THE TSU” (The Schacciata Unit), will create large artisan sandwiches on the family’s housemade Schiacciata bread. Schiacciata is a Tuscan bread similar to focaccia that is crunchy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. Schiacciata is a common street food in Tuscany. The TSU will also sell Side Hustle Bread’s popular loaves of bread, including Prosciutto Bread and Bites, Cheddar Jalapeno Sourdough, Olive Bread, and more.
The artwork for the truck was designed by the acclaimed artist Large Anthony, whose portfolio can be found at www.largeanthony.com. The mural is divided into two panels, with the first depicting the family’s humble beginnings of baking bread in their garage. The second panel showcases the growth and success of the company to where it is now.
Side Hustle’s Cafe on Wheels has over 15 public events booked so far, but the trailer officially hits the road on Wednesday, June 14th. Side Hustle is filling out the rest of its summer and fall calendar with public appearances and private events. They can be found here: SH MOBILE FLATBREAD EVENTS
